Polaris performed a feat that no decent sport quad had been shod with in its history, it delivered the 2006 Polaris Outlaw 525 with the first sport ATV with an independent rear suspension (IRS). With the introduction of the IRS suspension, Polaris combined forces with KTM for the engine, which was actually a 510cc powerplant. The complete package weighed in at 395 pounds and was touted as the fastest accelerating production ATV on the market. “The Outlaw 525 is the first ATV project where Polaris and KTM engineers worked side-by-side to create a new product,” said Mike Dougherty, general manager of the ATV division. “Coupling Independent Rear Suspension with a lighter, more powerful engine creates the ultimate trail sport quad.” The Polaris Outlaw 525 earned an onslaught of accolades, including the ATV Guide’s 2006 ATV of the Year in the Sport And Performance segment, ATV Rider’s Sport ATV of the Year and also All-Terrain Vehicle’s 2006 Best New Concept. Where other smaller manufacturers have previously failed was when it came to dealer support, which is where Polaris again revolutionized its stance amid the powersports industry, teaming with KTM to increase power and reduce weight with its 4-valve 11:1 compression KTM engine, which is an overhead cam design with roller rockers. The Polaris Outlaw 525 features a 39 mm Keihin FCR-MX carburetor and a 5-speed transmission with reverse and hydraulic clutch.
