The Honda CR500R began its production run in 1992 and lasted until the 2001 model year in preparation for the 20002 model year, when the first of the CRF's were released, the Honda CRF450R. The mighty CR500R was a true open class 2-stroke dirt bike that went head to head with the domineering Kawasaki KX500, which was then the Baja champion and also taking reigns at enduros and other venues. The Honda CR500R featured a 491cc liquid-cooled, reed-valve engine, which produces tremendous horsepower over a broad rpm-range. With a 6.8:1 compression ratio, the engine bore and stroke was 89.0mm x 79.0mm, respectively. The big bore machine boasted a 38mm flat-slide carburetor, which was an excellent move by Honda for its smooth bite. The front forks are fully adjustable 46mm inverted Kayaba cartridges, offering 12.2 inches of responsive and compliant suspension travel. Separate low-speed and high-speed compression damping adjusters were located together in a concentric fashion. The Pro-Link rear suspension made of an aluminum swingarm, which offers minimal unsprung weight and 12.6 inches of wheel travel. The fully adjustable adjustable piggyback-reservoir Kayaba shock, features a large, 16mm shock shaft for superb compliance and wheel control. Honda shed what would generally be an OEM set of wheels and instead opted for lightweight Takasago Excell extruded-aluminum wheels. The rims were a 32-spoke design. The CR500R front tire arrived with a 80/100-21, and the rear tire with a 110/100-18. Light and nimble, the CR500R weighs in at 222.7 pounds with 12.9 inches of ground clearance and a seat height of 36.9 inches.
